For more than 100 years, the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) which is the model organism has contributed to the research of genetics, development, and behavior, revealing fundamental principles, molecular mechanisms, and neural circuits that shed light on human health and diseases. The clock surrounding the fruit fly indicates circadian and sleep behavior. There are a lot of dishes in front of the fly, sybolizing the feeding behavior of a fly. Like us, flies also eat and sleep around the clock, which is regulated by circadian and other environmental inputs. Additionally, the molecule in the picture is guanosine tetraphosphate (ppGpp), the “magic spot” nucleotides originally known as involved in the stringent response in bacteria when there is an amino acid shortage. In the cover study in this issue, ppGpp was found to be the key molecule regulating sleep duration, sleep latency, and starvation-induced sleep loss, building a bridge between feeding and sleep.

2. Review: Mucosal immune responses in the lung during respiratory infection: The organization and regulation of iBALT structure

通讯作者:王硕、刘翠华

Highlights

• Inducible bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue (iBALT) plays a crucial role in controlling lung infections

• iBALT organization is supported by stromal cell activation and immune cell recruitment in response to antigen stimulation

• The iBALT structure carries out regulatory functions during respiratory virus or Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infections

• iBALT is a critical lymphoid organ in the lung, capable of storing memory lymphocytes, and can be induced by vaccination
